Supergirl boss Greg Berlanti addresses Sanvers future

Ever since it was announced that Floriana Lima would not be a series regular next season of Supergirl, fans have worried that the relationship between her character Maggie and Chyler Leigh’s Alex may be headed for heartbreak.

Attending a reunion panel for Everwood at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Wednesday, executive producer Greg Berlanti addressed the couple’s future, noting that Lima’s recurring status wouldn’t necessarily mean a lesser presence for the duo.

“I don’t think so,” Berlanti said as to whether this change would be noticeably felt. “If any character people love is not there as much as they want them there, they’re going to be upset that they’re not. For my perspective, I’d say we will use her as much as we can.”

For fans worried this may spell the end of the Sanvers relationship, Berlanti played coy. “I don’t want to say too much about the story aspects of it, but we got into it wanting to tell the story of Alex because she was a lead on the show and no matter what, we want to continue exploring Alex’s romantic life,” Berlanti said. “We get to do it in as much as actors want to come play and work with us as much as we can. It’s obviously been a really successful element of the show. We love telling the stories.”

Still, Berlanti recognized that this is the nature of the business. “It’s so hard in this business to get everybody swimming in the same direction,” he said. “We’re very blessed with that story line and actors involved with it, and the audience enjoyment of it. You never want to see those things go away, so we’ll see what happens.”

“I think [Floriana is] wonderful on the show, and she’s got some real ardent fans, and she should,” he said. “Of course we wanted more of her, but she’s got other things in the hopper and other things she wants to consider. We’d love to have her back as much as possible.”

Supergirl will return Monday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

Ask Ausiello: Spoiler on ‘Supergirl’

Question: Still worried about Alex and Maggie on Supergirl. Since Floriana Lima isn’t going to be on the show full-time, should I just assume Maggie turns down Alex’s proposal? —Cait

Ausiello:
Have faith, Cait! My latest intel suggests that Alex and Maggie’s romance is far from over, even if Lima will only recur in the CW drama’s third season. In other Supergirl casting news, J’onn will have his hands full in the beginning of Season 3 when an aggressive White Martian named Da’rack comes to Earth on a particularly delicate mission — which, we assume, will not be handled delicately.

SDCC 2017: Executive Producer Robert Rovner talks about what’s next for Maggie and Alex

What’s next for Sanvers: “Most of you know that Floriana is not able to return for the whole season, but that said, we have an amazing, beautiful story to tell in her remaining episodes that is emotional and modern and really honors the love between these two women,” Queller said. “She’s always welcome back to our show whenever she’s available.” Alex, meanwhile, will be weighing her relationship “against her work in the DEO and struggle with managing those two sides of her life,” Rovner said.

Floriana Lima Steps Down as Series Regular in Supergirl

Well, this doesn’t bode well for Supergirl‘s season-ending proposal.

Floriana Lima, who achieved series-regular status in the CW drama’s second season as Detective Maggie Sawyer, will return for Season 3 in a smaller capacity, TVLine has learned.

Of course, in addition to being one of National City’s finest detectives, Maggie is also the girlfriend of Alex Danvers, who ended Monday’s finale by asking Maggie to marry her. But rather than giving Alex an actual answer, Maggie simply smiled — perhaps knowing something the rest of us don’t about her future in town.

“We adore Floriana and have loved working with her to tell this inspiring story,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says in a statement. “Although she’s not available to us as a series regular next season, as she’s looking to pursue other opportunities, we’re happy she’ll be returning for multiple episodes in Season 3.”

Update: In a pair of Friday evening tweets, Lima said, “The best part of playing Maggie is getting to share an inspiring LOVE story and representing the LGBTQ+ community…. While this role was only meant for one season, I’m excited to appear in Season 3, as we see the #Supergirl story unfold #Sanvers #NotOverYet.”

As Lima recently told TVLine during our visit to the set, “What’s important is to show [Maggie/Alex] as a relationship and not to focus fully on the fact that these are two gay women…. We want to treat it and give it as much thought as any other relationship, right, but also be mindful that we are representing a community that needs more representation. We want to get it right, and we want to really think things through.”

Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima Open Up About ‘Sanvers’ Moment, LGBT Storyline’s ‘Profound’ Impact

This week on The CW’s Supergirl, 40 minutes of anxiety built up to three little, yet momentous, words, as DEO agent Alex Danvers and NCPD detective Maggie Sawyer mutually declared their love for one another, after the former narrowly dodged death.

“I love you, Maggie Sawyer.”

“I love you, Alex Danvers.”

“I kept asking when this was going to happen,” Chyler Leigh, who plays Alex, shared with TVLine during our recent set visit, “and [showrunner] Andrew [Kreisberg] was like, ‘Oh, we’ll see. We’ll see.’ And then of course this is how it happens.

“It’s a pretty big next step for them,” Leigh continued. On the heels of Alex’s kidnapping, “You have moments of, ‘You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone,’ but at the same time, they hadn’t gotten this vulnerable with each other quite yet.”

Floriana Lima — who previously teased the ILYs as “a pivotal moment” awaiting the girlfriends — went on to say, “Throughout this season, we’re showing a relationship blossom. Not only did Alex come out, and there’s a lot of emotion in that, but there are so many ups and downs in a relationship, right? And in this episode, a very sweet, loving connection has been developed.”
