Supergirl: News about Sanvers

On TvLine Q&A this week, someone ask about Maggie and Alex.

Question: I’m dying to know — does Maggie say yes to Alex’s proposal on Supergirl?! —Kevin
Ausiello: I’m not going to completely ruin the surprise for you, Kevin, but I will say that the CW drama is casting a reverend to preside over a “ceremony” in Episode 308. Looking for more proof? The network’s official description for the show’s Oct. 9 premiere involves Alex and Maggie discussing their “impending nuptials.” So… you do the math. (ETA: Or, in light of today’s breaking news, it could be this wedding the clergyman oversees.)

Supergirl: “Maggie does not die”

With Floriana Lima not returning to Supergirl as a series regular, the fate of the Alex-Maggie romance has been in question during the long hiatus, but now we have some definitive news.

“Maggie does not die,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells EW. “I’m sure a lot of people are afraid of that. Maggie will continue to exist in the world and we hope that if the opportunity presents itself for her, that she’ll come back from time to time.”

Lima joined the Greg Berlanti superhero drama in season 2 as Detective Maggie Sawyer, who struck up a romantic relationship with Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) for an emotional coming out story that culminated in Alex proposing to Maggie in the finale. However, the actress will only recur in season 3.

“Unfortunately, Floriana decided to move on, which left us with, how do we write her out as a regular while still honoring these two women who were deeply in love with each other?” Kreisberg says. “Taking a page out of some of our own personal dating history, we’ve come up with a story that we really feel like honors what’s come before them, and honors how much they love each other, how much they mean to each other, and how much they’ve changed each other’s lives. It’s some of the most emotional stuff we’ve ever done, and Floriana has been so good in these first five episodes. Episode 3 is all about Maggie and her dad, played by Carlos Bernard, and it’s some of the most heartbreaking stuff I’ve ever done on anything I’ve ever done.”

While the future may sound murky for the Sanvers relationship, fellow executive producer Greg Berlanti recently said the show is still committed to exploring Alex’s romantic life moving forward.

Supergirl is staging what may be a very awkward and intense family reunion for Maggie

24 alum Carlos Bernard will guest-star during Season 3 of the CW series as Maggie Sawyer’s father, TVLine has learned.

Like his daughter, Bernard’s Oscar Rodas is also a cop. It was revealed last season that Maggie grew up in a very conservative family that did not approve of her being a lesbian. After she was outed, Maggie and her parents got in a big fight, which resulted in the teen getting kicked out of the house by her dad.

Will pops drop by to make peace and give his stamp of approval to a possible engagement? At the close of the Season 2 finale, Alex popped the question to her girlfriend Maggie, whose answer remains a mystery for now. And although Maggie’s portrayer, Floriana Lima, will step down from series regular to recurring for Season 3, executive producer Greg Berlanti doesn’t believe the change will be perceptible to viewers.

“Any character people love is not there as much as people want them there,” Berlanti told TVLine at the Television Critics Association summer press tour this week. “[But] from my perspective, we will use her as much as we can.”

“She’s wonderful on the show, and she’s got some real ardent fans, as she should,” he continued. “We wanted more of her, but she’s got other things in the hopper, other things she wants to consider.”

Supergirl boss Greg Berlanti addresses Sanvers future

Ever since it was announced that Floriana Lima would not be a series regular next season of Supergirl, fans have worried that the relationship between her character Maggie and Chyler Leigh’s Alex may be headed for heartbreak.

Attending a reunion panel for Everwood at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Wednesday, executive producer Greg Berlanti addressed the couple’s future, noting that Lima’s recurring status wouldn’t necessarily mean a lesser presence for the duo.

“I don’t think so,” Berlanti said as to whether this change would be noticeably felt. “If any character people love is not there as much as they want them there, they’re going to be upset that they’re not. For my perspective, I’d say we will use her as much as we can.”

For fans worried this may spell the end of the Sanvers relationship, Berlanti played coy. “I don’t want to say too much about the story aspects of it, but we got into it wanting to tell the story of Alex because she was a lead on the show and no matter what, we want to continue exploring Alex’s romantic life,” Berlanti said. “We get to do it in as much as actors want to come play and work with us as much as we can. It’s obviously been a really successful element of the show. We love telling the stories.”

Still, Berlanti recognized that this is the nature of the business. “It’s so hard in this business to get everybody swimming in the same direction,” he said. “We’re very blessed with that story line and actors involved with it, and the audience enjoyment of it. You never want to see those things go away, so we’ll see what happens.”

“I think [Floriana is] wonderful on the show, and she’s got some real ardent fans, and she should,” he said. “Of course we wanted more of her, but she’s got other things in the hopper and other things she wants to consider. We’d love to have her back as much as possible.”

Supergirl will return Monday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

Ask Ausiello: Spoiler on ‘Supergirl’

Question: Still worried about Alex and Maggie on Supergirl. Since Floriana Lima isn’t going to be on the show full-time, should I just assume Maggie turns down Alex’s proposal? —Cait

Ausiello:
Have faith, Cait! My latest intel suggests that Alex and Maggie’s romance is far from over, even if Lima will only recur in the CW drama’s third season. In other Supergirl casting news, J’onn will have his hands full in the beginning of Season 3 when an aggressive White Martian named Da’rack comes to Earth on a particularly delicate mission — which, we assume, will not be handled delicately.

SDCC 2017: Executive Producer Robert Rovner talks about what’s next for Maggie and Alex

What’s next for Sanvers: “Most of you know that Floriana is not able to return for the whole season, but that said, we have an amazing, beautiful story to tell in her remaining episodes that is emotional and modern and really honors the love between these two women,” Queller said. “She’s always welcome back to our show whenever she’s available.” Alex, meanwhile, will be weighing her relationship “against her work in the DEO and struggle with managing those two sides of her life,” Rovner said.
